What is Cloudflare R2?

Cloudflare R2 is a storage service offered by Cloudflare – a popular cloud service provider – which is compatible with AWS S3's API.

Why use Cloudflare R2?

Some developers prefer to use Cloudflare R2 over AWS S3 as the service currently offers free egress data transfer.

Price differences between AWS S3 and Cloudflare R2:

Cloudflare R2 offers a free tier that includes 10GB of storage, after which you pay $0.015 per GB. Ingress and egress data transfer is free.

AWS S3 offers a free tier that includes 5 GB of storage, after which you pay $0.023* per GB. Ingress data transfer is free. The free tier includes 100GB of egress data transfer, after which you pay $0.09* per GB.

* AWS offers tiered pricing, meaning your price per unit decreases as your usage increases.

Other considerations:

As with all products and services, there are more factors to consider than cost alone.

The correct choice between AWS S3 and Cloudflare R2 is entirely down to your organization's requirements, team structure, and budget.

The great news is, Bytescale now supports both!
